use it up..

wear it out, make it do, or do without.

i've always liked that saying. it makes me think of living on a farm. or in the woods on a mountain and not going to the store constantly. it is the start of a new year, perhaps a challenge is in order.

can i go a whole year without buying something new? ummm. do i want to find out? eeeee, i dunno. what if i only buy used things? and handmade things? and promise to mend, patch and otherwise rehabilitate the things i already have?

it's the 17th and i haven't broken the rules yet.

i think i can do it. yeaaahhh it's a snap! no new, just used or made by hand. by me or someone else.

this year, i'll try just for stuff for me. then, if no one gets hurt, i'll try the whole household next year.

yes. all purchases must be handmade or used.

exceptions will be:
medicine and mediciney things
food
household things shared with more than one person (laundry soap, glass cleaner, tp, sheet rock, ya know)
gasoline
business stuff

every effort will be made to purchase the exceptions in the handmade/used style, but won't count as cheating. why? because i said so! :) when it becomes necessary or practical to cheat a bit, i will try to find the needed item from a small local business.

can you do it, too? i bet you can! let me know and i'll keep tabs on you ;)

Sounds like a good plan :-) I try to buy a lot of handmade also. Self-plug: I can help you out with lip balm and some other stuff ;)

Impressive...I don't know if I could. I like shopping to much.

Thrift stores save my budget quite frequently though. Are you going to track your progress on here?

i'll keep you all updated. ahhhh! :) crap now i really have to do it! :)

I too harbor simple life on the farm fantasies. I mean seriously how many trips to Target must I make? I have faith you can do it! Have you read the No Impact Man blog? It will motivate you. No new stuff and no toilet paper. Now that's a challenge.

i have read that blog. omg when his daughter tells people she doesn't want any packaging...wow.

yes. target. sigh. i knew i was doing well when i went there and there were cutie clothes on clearance i hadn't even seen displayed at regular price.

i just feel like i should at least try to make the choice to buy things that will last or could at least be repaired. i feel like i focus too much on just replacing things.

but seriously, does anyone know where i can get a pair of pants that will last longer than a year?

I love this idea and I want to try and join ya. :) I've been sort of working towards this... slowly, in my etsy obsession turned actually thinking about where all the things I buy come from. I love the feeling of finding what I need used or handmade. Clothes wise... it's rough... because I'm a student/nanny and I'm definitely not rolling in the dough, but there is the thrift! :)

(plus it'd give me an excuse to show off my thrift/etsy finds even more. ;) )
